PVC hat rack mod

 Sup people,

I have been stricken by another bout of laziness and gaming recently so I haven't gotten around to posting this writeup. Alas, the time has come! I've come up with a simple design that is good for 9 hats, and even more if you slide adjustable caps towards the center. The design is modular, and can be disassembled into many smaller pieces. Check it!
Required materials:
  • ~30' of 1/2'' PVC
  • PVC cement
  • 13 PVC end caps
  • 5 plus-shaped couplers
  • 8 45° couplers
  • A sliver of a regular coupler

Writeup:
Start out by drilling into the very center of one of the + pieces. I had a hole saw that ended up fitting 1/2'' PVC perfectly. Solvent weld a 2' piece of PVC into the hole. Then cut off a 1/4'' thick ring off the end of your normal coupler, slide it onto the 2' piece, and weld that piece to both its counterparts:

Here's how it should look at the bottom junction. Things should not be wobbly! If they are, you may need to start over with a more snug fit.

At this point it's time to assemble the branching points. Use stubs of PVC to attach the pieces like so:

The base cannot support the weight of the entire structure without supports. They are about 1 1/4'' in length, and are the hardest part of this mod. I used my belt sander's adjustable fence to sand the ends of the pieces of PVC at a 35° and 55° angle. In addition, you have to use a Dremel with sanding disc to get the piece snug for maximum adhesion surface area. Quite a bitch and a LOT of PVC dust.

At this point, all that's left is assembly! Here's the bottom two tiers in place:

And fully assembled:

Oh yeah!

Final words:
I gotta say, the ranges on this bad boy are phenomenal! In any case, I feel pretty good about the performance. No Chrony for you guys today--sorry! My next project is definitely going to be Nerf-related, though. I think it might be time to go back to the land of air guns.

Stay tuned for more goodies in the future!
